It’s Still Hot!

Hello!

So I made it through my first real, full week in Neiva! And this week we had more lessons than I have ever had in the mission! Woo-hoo!

We have been working a lot with the area books from the two areas we are now covering, and we have been having a lot of success. On Tuesday we spent the most of the day just finding a bunch of people, and we made a bunch of appointments for later in the week. And we taught a joven named José, he was walking in the street last week with his dog, and started talking to us when his dog wanted to play with the soccer ball we had. And we found out that his mom is a less active member, and that he wanted to listen! His is a super-cool guy, and we are gonna see what we can do.

Then, Wednesday night, after another lesson with José, we were walking back toward the house with a member; Jeisson, at like 8:30 when a night guard called us over. He was a member from a different ward, and he was with a young woman on her moped who told us that she wanted an exorcism for her nephew! So we went over to her house to find that she lives with her two sisters, and each one has two young children! And no dads! So we gave a priesthood blessing to the little girl who was having trouble sleeping, and when we were saying bye, they put another child on the chair. And we gave him a blessing. And this continued through all of the children, and then the moms wanted blessings too! So that night I gave 4 blessings and my companion 5, and they said that they wanted to listen to our message!

Then Thursday, we met with a less active who's 8 year-old daughter hasn't been baptized. And, as we were talking, we found out that she would love to get baptized! So now we are working hard with her mom to get her to be fully active again.

On Friday we did interchanges with the other elders in the district, and I was in my area with Elder Ayala. We found an uncle of one of our investigators who wanted to talk a little over the bible (He is super Pentecostal), so we went over there and chatted a little. After saying a bunch about how we are all confused, and that Jesus, God, and the Holy Ghost are all one, I read him a scripture and we just started testifying to it. The spirit was there, and he could feel it; he was completely shut-up, without fighting back with his bible or his words. I think that he still might be too stubborn to progress, but we will see!

On Saturday we had 6 lessons to investigators with members present! It was a great day, even though we had to work all morning, all afternoon and all evening. And I also taught a class of English! We have one investigator, Nancy, who likes to listen to us, but is still strong in her Christian religion. However, in our lesson Saturday, she was super interested in how the Fall of Adam and Eve could have been part of the plan of God. She doesn't want to believe it, but we have been using the Bible with the Book of Mormon a lot to show her how helpful and true it really is.

On Sunday the only investigator that came was Alison (and alone, without her mom!). In Neiva, the people are super open to talk, but are super lazy and never want to commit to anything haha. So that is our new challenge here.

And today we went to the synthetic soccer courts and played like 2 hours in the blazing heat! Woohoo!

Have a great week! I am super grateful for the opportunity that I have to be here, and also for the power of the priesthood. I know that this is the true church!

Love,

Elder Toombs

July 21, 2014 Neiva!

July 21, 2014

Neiva!

Hi everybody!

It has been a good, super hot week here in Neiva!!! Neiva is a lot like Arizona, except there is a ton of humidity in the air (even though it still hasn't rained haha), so at nighttime it is still hot and we just sleep without sheets or blankets and with a personal fan haha. So my ward in Manzanares, and we have 4 missionaries here. There were 6 before (4 Elders and 2 Hermanas), but they took the hermanas out, and we are in charge of opening up their area and part of the other missionaries' area too. It has been kinda tough searching for addresses and people in an area we have never been in before, but I have figured out how to search addresses without a gps now, so it is all good haha.

So before all that, last Monday, I had a little time to say goodbye to a few families (including Familia Reyes in the photo). I'm gonna miss Modelia a lot! And then that night, I was up until like 1 in the morning packing. Tuesday morning, we took off in a big tour bus to Neiva! And I found out that two hermanas from my Zone, Hna Quijada and Hna Yauli, were coming too! And Elder Mills, it was cool to have so many people going down there together.

My companion is Elder Sariego, he is the District Leader of our ward, has 17 months in the mission, is Chileno, and a pretty cool guy. We have been working hard this week to find a lot of the people that are in our area books, all the people that the other missionaries had been teaching. And that isn't a lot haha. But while we were looking for some people, I saw a few people moving into an apartment building, and we asked if we could help them out. We then found out two important things: They are members, and they were moving into the 5th floor! Without elevator! So we helped them carry a bunch of stuff up the 5 flights of stairs, and I guess in return, they contacted their neighbors for us! So we got a few new investigators out of it!

The people here are a lot more open, too. The other day, we had like 45 minutes with little to do, so I started knocking doors, and the second door was a family that just invited us in, gave us lemonade, and let us share something! And there are a lot of people like that here! I heard that a missionary here a few months ago had 54 new investigators during his 6 weeks, so we are gonna see what we can do too!

Yesterday was the independence day of Colombia!

Today, we played micro with the district in the morning (there is a court just 2 minutes away from the house), and then later in the day we played with some of the elders from the zone! It was horrible haha. It is super hot, and I am super sun-burned; it was a good time, but it still sucks to play when it is super hot haha.

Well, have a good week!

Love,

July 14, 2014 Cambios!

July 14, 2014

Cambios!

So this week we have transfers... and I am leaving! It is super agridulce (bittersweet), but I am excited to be able to go to... Neiva! It is a city like 6 hours outside of Bogotá, in tierra caliente (hot land). So it is super hot haha.

We have had a pretty good week, where we found (well received references of) a couple more investigators, but this time investigators that are prepared! One of them is an old man who lives like on the border of our area, named Jaime. He was a reference from the 1st councilor of the bishopric of the next ward over, which belongs to the North mission. Jaime has been attending (not assisting...fetching Spanish haha) church over there for like 2 months now, and wants to be baptized! He is a super cool guy, and I know that he will be baptized soon.

On Friday we had 4 lessons with investigators! Normally we can squeeze in like 1 or 2 lessons every day, but this time we did well! We taught Mercedes again, this time, the Word of Wisdom. And she will be having problems with... none of it! She has already been living the Word of Wisdom for years, due to hypertension from coffee and a near-death experience with alcohol. She is a great reminder for me that there are prepared people out there, we just need to go and find them!

Yesterday, it was pretty cool, I got to help a few children with their English homework! We have been setting up an English class here, but now I am leaving... Maybe in Neiva haha.

And big news... this week we found out... that we can play soccer again!!!! So today, the Kennedy and Libertad zones went over to this place with great synthetic fields, and we played! We also brought our Elder's Quorum President, Hermano Parraga (he likes soccer haha). It was an awesome time, but now I am just totally wiped out, and my body hurts all over. But it is ok. Then after Hno. Parraga bought us lunch!

Have a great week!

July 7, 2014 8 Months!

Gotta be quick today, sorry haha.

We finally got an investigator to church! (It is tough at 7:30 in the morning, outside of our area haha). Mercedes, the wife of a less-active member Douglas, came to church, and almost on time! She has been progressing great, has a baptismal date, and really is a person prepared by angels.

Today we went to Monserrate again! Only this time, it was super cloudy and raining, so I didn't get any cool pictures of Bogotá. But it was a fun day with the zone!

Aaaanndd we had a lesson in which my companion was super nervous because there was a super pretty girl there haha. (Elder Park don't tell him I said that haha).

Well I don't really have any more time. I know that this church is true, and my testimony grows everyday! Never forget the testimony-building experiences that you have, I have seen too many people fall away from the church because they forget about the testimony that they had. Have a great week!

Love,

Elder Toombs
